A short walk from the pier in San Miguel de Cozumel, you’ll find two of the most hospitable people you’ll ever meet. Gonzalo “Chalo” Morelos and his wife, Norma, run a hot spot for shipboard entertainers and divers on their lunch break.
Within the walls of Hotel Villablanca, across from the Villablanca Reef, Chalo’s Antojitos Mexicanos & Seafood offers a menu created to show off the best Cozumel Island has to offer.
From the moment you walk in, Chalo makes you feel like a long-lost friend finally returning home. He is a master mixologist and makes the most delectable margaritas to ever pass between your lips. Aside from the tried-and-true lime, order the mango and cucumber margaritas as well.
Norma runs the kitchen. She owns it. And she will show you that your grandmother’s fried chicken is actually quite bland. You simply can’t go wrong with this menu. From the guacamole dip to the pollo en rajas poblanas con champiñones (chicken rajas with mushrooms, pictured above), the only word to describe it is, well…silence, which is what you hear when your lunch is served. Everyone seems to forget how to speak.
If you’re sailing through Cozumel and have only a few hours in port, I highly recommend making Chalo’s a priority. Tell them Clay sent you!
